Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
